A few words to clear the air...

Lately I've been noticing that a LOT of people take my comments and posts about atheism (or against religion) personally. I'd like to clear the air and hopefully give a bit of insight into my atheist mind. Perhaps this is in vain. Perhaps not.

First and foremost, I do -NOT- think ALL religious people are hypocrites or idiots. If I did, I could hardly be friends (let alone as good of friends as I am) with many people in my life. I can't imagine my life without those people. They're amazing and I love them. End of story. Please please please- stop thinking that I'm sitting behind the monitor saying to myself "Oh, this should really get so-and-so's goat. Hahaha." That's absolutely NOT the case. If you should think so even for a moment perhaps we aren't as good of friends as I had hoped. I would like to think that you know that I am not one to mince words, and if I feel something, I will sure as shit tell you.

Something that not a single person has asked is: WHY am I an atheist?

Well, let me tell you. I am a see it and believe it kind of woman. I don't believe in the Christian god any more than I believe in the Christian devil, or Thor, or Loki, or Ra... no gods of any kind. I don't believe in magic or fairy tales. Period. If I can see it, touch it, test it-- it's real. So yes, I lack faith. But I do not hate anyone based on religious standpoint alone.

I grew up in a religious household. I attended church for many many years. I have read the bible numerous times. I've read parts of numerous religious texts. I've read the full Theory of Evolution.

Why I do loathe religion? It teaches you that it's acceptable to discriminate and judge others. In no way should you EVER tell a stranger that they cannot marry who they want, love who they want, or do what they want with their life. In no way should you discriminate against anyone based on sex, orientation, race, or religion. I understand I'm pretty good at overgeneralizing and I really am trying to work on that.

Something I was always taught from a very young age is that these differences do not matter. We are ALL HUMAN. Period. We need to set our differences aside and work together to move humanity forward. We cannot do that if we're fighting over who can marry one another, deciding what races can do what and where, or selling humans into slavery as property. It's just... not okay.

How about this: Don't be an asshole.

Treat people how you'd like to be treated. Don't take everything so personally. Smile. Lend a helping hand. Pay it forward and buy the person's coffee in line behind you. Hug people. Be helpful and courteous. Don't dwell on the past. Pet a puppy.

It would seem that I've run out of quirky things to say, so this is where I shall end this.

Bonne Nuit
